The regional cycling network, the Olomouc region

The Olomouc Region is a pilot region where they want to deliver serviceability for cyclists throughout the territory. It requires providing connections between all municipalities and a safe cycling network, which was designed in 2017 and consists of either existing, and expected cycle tracks, and other utilitarian roads. Every year, the network has been updating with newly built cycle tracks. Regional government works as a coordinator which is responsible for making connections between the sections and cycleways that have been planned for implementation. Systematic communication with municipal governments provides the Region with necessary information about such plans. There are 107 cycling projects registered in the Region to December 31, 2020, which could deliver 115km more cycle tracks in the Region by the end of 2023. Since the cycling network was marked twenty years ago when there were only few cycle tracks in the Region, the network will be traced out again in 2022 to include the newly built ones.

In some cases, the Region takes over responsibility for the implementation of new cycle tracks. Some of the municipalities that are located on the planned network do not have capacities and resources to build cycleways long and safe enough in their territories. That’s why there are empty spots on the network where there is no cycling infrastructure provided, and cyclists must ride on dangerous roads. If the aim is to provide a safe, useful and continuous network, it is necessary to consider funding from regional resources. Some of the regions have already taken on the role of a coordinator. These are usually sections on internationally important cycling networks, which is the Moravian Cycle Route for the Olomouc Region. There are about 20 problematic sections on the Route which need to be delivered, and some of them the Region will implement.

Cycle Route number 5 has 23 problematic sections.
