The idea of using an idle track bed between Cheb and Waldsassen to build a cycle route there has arisen within a long-term cooperation of Cheb with German towns and was included into their common project of the Wallenstein's Trail. In 2001, the town of Cheb began negotiating on the acquisition of the lands into the ownership of the town. In 2003, the railway track was cancelled by the decision of the Ministry of Transport.
In 2006, in the first stage the section between Slapany and Egerteich was delivered, with an asphalt surface, 3m wide and 1.3km long. The overall costs climbed up to CZK 7.5 million, of which CZK 1.9 million came from the budget of the Karlovy vary Region to support the cycling infrastructure development in the region. The second stage in 2009 when the section between Slapany and Cheb was delivered, was financed from the OP Cross-border Cooperation between CR and Bavaria with CZK 16.4 million. And again, the Karlovy Vary Region allocated CZK 1.636 million from its budget. Since this section is a shared path for cyclists and pedestrians, it is 3m wide with 0.5m of unpaved curbs on both sides.
A subsidy of 969,977 euro has been granted so far from the OP Goal 3 - Cross-border Cooperation to build the last section.
